During an Orisha divination, various methods can be used, such as casting cowry shells (Dilogun) or using kola nuts (Obi). The diviner casts the shells onto a divination board or a sacred cloth, known as an opon Ifá or erindinlogun, interpreting the patterns in which the shells fall to reveal messages from the Orishas. The purpose of the session is to gain insight into the practitioner’s life, determine who their head Orisha is, and their current standing with the Orishas, and identify any necessary actions or offerings (propitiation) to align themselves with good fortune or to avert any impending difficulties. It’s a deeply spiritual experience, rich with symbolism and tradition, connecting the practitioner with the wisdom of the Orishas to navigate life’s challenges.
